The Lawnmowers Independent Theatre Company is a unique company run by and for people with learning disabilities which is based in Gateshead in the North-East of England. It is an Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation. It was formed in 1986 by a group of learning disabled adults who had met on a community arts project in Gateshead. It became a charitable company limited by guarantee in 2001. Over the last twenty years, the Company has led hundreds of workshops and have researched, devised and toured work, mainly to learning disabled audiences. The Company has also produced videos, booklets, DVD's, run residencies, summer schools, hosted nightclubs and established an apprenticeship scheme. The Company uses comedy, music and dance to help highlight issues around learning disability. They research, devise and tour shows, as well as running nightclubs and workshops. The Members of the Company place themselves alongside the daily struggles faced by people with learning disabilities. All of their projects work towards a future, just and equal society. The group has built up an international reputation, with appearances at the Edinburgh Festival and international arts festivals in Barcelona, Toronto, Gdansk and Galway. Alongside Lawnmowers Actors, the Company also runs the Krocodile Krew project to provide nightclubs for people with learning disabilities in Gateshead and the North East.
